Very VERY awesome capture of this warrior. You can almost make out the story of his life when you look at him. This makes me proud to be from an amazing culture.

Hmmmm. Really? I don't think anything you said above has meaning, but in case I'm wrong let me ask a few questions. What level of expertise do you have regarding Indians, or if you prefer, Native Americans, in the 19th century? I need to know this to address the accusation of Romanticism, as opposed to accurate, specific portrayal, based on contemporary photographs and advice from historians.
Then I'd like to ask in what sense we are to care. You criticize possible Romanticism but then imply Romantic sympathies are missing.
Next what makes you think living Natives weren't consulted?

how about drawing a native as a businessman or lawyer... better yet a female native doctor?

You can only paint so many head dresses and natives on horseback.

Not being negative... just trying to spread a fresh perspective on how to represent native people.

Because that would be boring. Businessmen and lawyers, regardless of race, would be pretty uninteresting in art. Unless you're as interesting as a corpse, which is also a fresh perspective in regards to your fresh perspective.

That isn't a fresh perspective. That is an old perspective, freedom fighter. This painting was done as an illustration for a film with a segment taking place in the 1800s. A modern character would have been a major anachronism. However, what I painted was just about right.

Indians, or if you prefer native Americans, neither name does much for me, are varied and interesting in history, but one aspect seems appropriate here: Counting coup. Among the Sioux, after assignment to the reservations, a practice ensued of passing coup from a father to his son. Counting coup was the practice of touching an enemy in combat or after death, and those touches would be counted and add to status. But after the reservation confinement warrior activities ceased, leaving sons without status. So fathers passed along their coup to their sons. This of course didn't work. Because you can't take on the coup of another person. I would like to point that out in regard to your attempt to mine for offense.

I really dont have much of an interest in a "native" film today unless it has a native director. Natives continue to be portrayed in the past...not present and thats whats boring. Pick what ever profession you like...even directors need to move on.

The first people have moved on to the future... Check out spirit the seventh fire...get the message and spread it on.
Warrior status lives strong on the rez today and if you have ever attended a powwow you would know this.

Again..not trying to be negative ...trying to enlighten.

You aren't enlightening me, and you are also being self righteous where you have not been invited. Don't feel free to evangelize silly nonsense with my work. You aren't being negative, you are being ridiculous. Don't post further messages on my pages.
